As an ’80s kid myself, I recently found myself reminiscing about what it was like growing up back then.
1. VHS Tapes and VCRs 📼

Before streaming, there were VHS tapes. You’d head to the local video rental store, spend forever choosing a movie, and then rush home to watch it. And everyone remembers the dreaded “BE KIND, REWIND” reminder. Recording your favorite TV shows on a blank VHS tape was also a weekend ritual.

2. Rotary Phones 📞

There were no smartphones, caller ID, or texting. If you wanted to call someone, you picked up the phone and slowly dialed each number with your finger. And if you made a mistake near the end? You had to start all over again. Many families had a phone sitting in the kitchen or hallway, sometimes with a long cord that gave you just enough privacy to sneak away and talk.

3. Walkman Cassette Players 🎧

The Walkman changed how people listened to music. You could put your favorite cassette in, plug in your headphones and take your music with you. Of course, batteries never seemed to last long enough. And when the tape got stuck, there was always one trusted solution: a pencil to rewind it.

4. Arcade Games 🕹️

The arcade was where kids went to compete, hang out and try to beat the high score. Games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man could keep kids entertained for hours. You didn’t need an online account or Wi-Fi — just a pocket full of quarters and enough skill to stay on the machine.

5. Cabbage Patch Kids 🧸

Cabbage Patch Kids became one of the most recognizable toys of the decade. Kids could have their own doll with a unique name and adoption certificate, making the toy feel much more personal. They became especially popular as holiday gifts and were famously difficult to find during the peak of their popularity.

6. Rubik’s Cube 🧊

The colorful cube became a worldwide obsession. It looked simple, but solving it could be incredibly frustrating. Kids would spend hours twisting the rows, trying different combinations and hoping they could finally get every side to match.

7. Saturday Morning Cartoons 📺

Saturday mornings meant cartoons. Kids would wake up early, grab some cereal and sit in front of the TV. Shows featuring characters like He-Man, The Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers became part of childhood for millions of kids.

8. Lite-Brite 💡

Lite-Brite turned a dark room into a colorful little art studio. You would place tiny colored pegs through sheets of black paper and watch the picture light up. It was simple, creative and incredibly satisfying when you finally finished a design.

9. Transformers 🤖

“More than meets the eye.” Transformers became a huge part of ’80s childhood. Kids collected the action figures, transformed them from vehicles into robots and recreated scenes from the popular cartoon. Optimus Prime and Megatron became instantly recognizable characters.

10. Big Wheel 🚲

Before kids had smartphones or gaming consoles, a Big Wheel could provide hours of entertainment. Kids would race around sidewalks and driveways, spin around corners and sometimes compete with friends to see who could go the fastest. For many ’80s kids, it was the ultimate neighborhood ride.
