The family of 15-year-old Daria Serkov has broken its silence after the teenager was killed in a tragic crash in New York City’s East Village.

Daria was riding a Citi Bike with another teenage girl on Friday night when they were struck by a large commercial truck as it turned from East 14th Street onto First Avenue, according to police. Daria suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead after being taken to Bellevue Hospital. The other girl, 16, was hospitalized and was reported to be in stable condition.

In a statement shared by the family, her loved ones described Daria, whom they called “Dasha,” as being full of love, joy and energy. They said she cared deeply about other people and brought warmth to those around her.

The family also asked for privacy as they try to process what they called “an unimaginable loss.” They said they were grateful to everyone who had reached out, attended a vigil and continued to keep Daria in their hearts.

Friends and classmates have also gathered to remember the teenager. One friend described Daria as someone who brought light to everyone around her, while a vigil at the crash site drew a large crowd of mourners.

The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash. As of the latest reports, the truck driver had remained at the scene and no charges had been filed.
