Longtime Texas news anchor Victor Lopez has died at the age of 61 following a two-year battle with Stage 4 colon cancer.

Lopez was a familiar face to viewers across the Midland-Odessa area, where he spent more than two decades working at NewsWest 9. He began his career at the station in 2003 in master control, later becoming a producer and reporter before reaching the anchor desk in 2011.

Lopez was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in August 2024. Even while undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy, he continued working and openly shared his experience with viewers. In July 2025, he celebrated reaching remission, but the cancer later returned and spread to his liver and bloodstream.

Throughout his treatment, Lopez also used his platform to encourage people not to delay cancer screenings, particularly as colorectal cancer rates among younger adults have been increasing.

NewsWest 9 announced that Lopez died surrounded by loved ones. His colleagues and members of the West Texas community have since shared tributes, remembering him for his dedication to journalism, his work with the community and the support he gave to those around him.

His death marks the end of a more than 20-year career at the station and leaves behind a lasting connection with the viewers who welcomed him into their homes each morning.
