Lady! You can’t do that here!

“Lady! You can’t do that here!” Keith said, widening his eyes in shock.

“Yes, I can. I’m feeding my baby,” she responded, unfazed.

Keith looked at the other passengers, but many looked down or away. So, none of them wanted to get into this fight. But he saw a few moving around, trying to escape the woman. He was not the only uncomfortable person on the ride. The light turned green, so he had to keep driving, shaking his head the entire time.

“I can’t believe the gall of some people. There’s no decency anywhere these days. Kids think they’re entitled to the whole world and just take out their bosom in front of complete strangers,” he started mumbling, but the words got louder and louder.

He saw the woman adjusting her cover through the rearview mirror to hide more of herself, but that wasn’t enough.

Keith chuckled but composed himself quickly. “Like I said, no decency. Where’s her husband? Why didn’t anyone in her life tell her to have some self-respect? It’s disgusting,” he added and chuckled.

Keith kept mocking her until she was done breastfeeding and stood to leave a few stops later. He watched her go with a self-satisfied smirk, silently wishing he’d never have to deal with such behavior again.

But when the bus doors opened, Keith saw a man waiting for her. He had assumed she was a single mom, but seeing her husband shocked him. Then the man looked up, and Keith’s face went pale as he recognized him immediately.

Standing at the bus stop was Jason, Keith’s former boss—the same man who had fired him a year ago for “inappropriate behavior toward coworkers.” Keith’s smirk disappeared instantly as Jason’s piercing gaze locked onto his through the open bus door. The woman, oblivious to Keith’s reaction, handed their baby to Jason with a tired smile.

Jason kissed the top of her head and said something to her, but his attention quickly shifted to Keith. His expression turned cold, and he stepped closer to the door.

“Keith,” Jason said, his voice steady but laced with warning. “I thought I’d never have the displeasure of seeing you again. And yet, here you are, harassing my wife.”

Keith’s heart raced as the other passengers turned to watch the interaction. He opened his mouth to respond, but Jason cut him off.

“You know, Keith,” Jason continued, his voice rising slightly, “your judgmental, condescending attitude got you in trouble before, and apparently, you haven’t learned a damn thing. My wife doesn’t need your unsolicited opinions or your mockery. She was doing what any good mother would do—caring for her child.”

Keith’s face flushed red as he stammered, “I—I wasn’t harassing her. I just thought… well… people should be more discreet, you know?”

Jason’s jaw tightened, and his wife, now aware of the tension, looked between them. She gently touched Jason’s arm. “It’s not worth it,” she said softly, but Jason wasn’t done.

“You don’t get to decide what’s appropriate for a mother to do when caring for her baby,” Jason snapped. “What’s truly indecent is a grown man publicly shaming a woman for feeding her child. Maybe it’s time you learned some decency yourself.”

Keith shrank back into his seat, unable to meet Jason’s eyes. The other passengers, who had been silent before, began murmuring in agreement, their disapproving looks now directed at Keith.

As Jason turned to walk away with his wife and child, he paused one last time. “You’re lucky I have more important things to focus on,” he said, his voice low and sharp. “But if I ever hear about you pulling something like this again, we’ll have a much bigger problem.”

The doors closed, and the bus started moving, but the atmosphere remained tense. Keith stared out the window, his face still burning with shame. For the first time, he realized how cruel and unnecessary his words had been.

For the rest of his shift, Keith stayed quiet, haunted by the look on Jason’s face and the humiliation of being called out in front of everyone. Perhaps it was time to reconsider how he treated people—because the world was much smaller than he’d ever realized, and you never knew who might be watching.
