Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has found himself at odds with President Donald Trump after the president drew comparisons between the two men and their wives. El-Sayed later responded with a pointed remark that appeared to take aim at Trump’s marriage to first lady Melania Trump.

El-Sayed recently secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, setting up a closely watched general election contest against Republican Mike Rogers, the former congressman. The race is expected to attract significant national attention as Democrats look to challenge Republican control of the Senate.

What began as a political dispute, however, quickly became personal.

During a speech on Thursday, Trump took aim at El-Sayed, describing him as a “communist” and saying he was “full of shit,” comments that were met with cheers from supporters.

El-Sayed later addressed Trump’s remarks in an interview with Sky News, responding with a personal jab of his own.

“At least I don’t let mine go in the middle of the Oval Office,” El-Sayed said, referring to Trump’s earlier comments.

But the exchange did not stop there.

On Saturday, Trump shared a side-by-side image featuring himself and Melania alongside El-Sayed and his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku. The president captioned the post, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”

During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, El-Sayed was asked about Trump’s post and appeared ready with a response.

“Yeah, he’s right,” El-Sayed said, agreeing that the two men represent very different visions of America.

He went on to contrast his own relationship with his wife with what he portrayed as the relationship between Trump and Melania.

El-Sayed described one version of America as being controlled by powerful figures who, in his words, are primarily interested in financial gain, while presenting his own marriage as one based on genuine affection and shared family goals.

He said he and Sarah “genuinely love each other,” adding that they had recently enjoyed pancakes together and wanted to help create an America where they could raise their family and provide their children with a good future.

El-Sayed suggests Trump’s marriage is “rocky”

El-Sayed also used the interview to shift the conversation back toward economic concerns, asking whether Americans can afford gas and groceries and whether parents believe their children will have better opportunities than they did.

He then made another pointed comment about Trump and Melania while speaking with CNN host Jake Tapper.

“Actually, Sarah and I like each other,” El-Sayed said. “I don’t know about the first lady and the president, but, from what I have heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road.”

The exchange adds another personal dimension to what is already shaping up to be a closely watched Michigan Senate race, with both sides expected to intensify their attacks as the campaign progresses.
