President Donald Trump welcomed 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, the boy Ryder rescued from dangerous surf, to the Oval Office.

On July 25, Ryder was working as a lifeguard at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, when Nathaniel was caught in powerful waves. Ryder entered the rough water and held onto the boy as they battled through the surf until they could be brought safely back to shore. The dramatic rescue was captured on video and quickly went viral.

On August 17, Trump welcomed Ryder, Nathaniel and their families to the White House and praised the teenager for his bravery.

Ryder credited his lifeguard training for helping him stay focused during the dangerous rescue, saying that in moments like that, they rely on their training.
