She Lived To 117, And Doctors Found One Everyday Food That May Have Helped Her Stay Healthy For So Long

Maria Branyas Morera became one of the most remarkable examples of human longevity, living to the extraordinary age of 117 years and 168 days. Born in 1907, she became the world’s oldest living person before passing away on August 19, 2024.

After her death, scientists examined her DNA, blood, and other biological samples to understand how her body remained remarkably healthy despite her advanced age. Their findings revealed a fascinating combination of genetics, lifestyle, and eating habits.

But one ordinary food caught the researchers’ attention: plain yogurt.

According to researchers, Maria regularly ate three servings of yogurt every day during the final decade of her life. Dr. Manel Esteller and his research team investigated whether this habit might have contributed to her exceptional health.

The scientists discovered that her gut contained unusually high levels of beneficial bacteria, particularly Bifidobacterium. These microorganisms are associated with digestive health and may help regulate inflammation and support the immune system. Researchers believe her yogurt consumption may have played a role in maintaining this healthy balance, although they could not prove that yogurt was responsible for her longevity.

Maria’s lifestyle involved much more than yogurt. She followed a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, fruit, fish, and olive oil. She also stayed physically active by walking, avoided smoking and alcohol, and maintained social connections.

Her genetic profile was another important discovery. Researchers identified characteristics that may have helped protect her against certain age-related diseases and supported healthy bodily functions.

The biggest lesson from Maria’s remarkable life is that longevity probably does not depend on a single miracle food. Her exceptional genetics and everyday habits may have worked together to help her live such a long life.

Could a simple daily serving of plain yogurt be one small step toward better health? Scientists say it is a promising possibility, but more research is needed before anyone can claim that eating yogurt will help people live longer.

Her story reminds us that sometimes, the most interesting clues to healthy aging can be found in the simplest parts of our daily routine.
