President Donald Trump is doubling down on his proposal to give every American adult a $5,000 “Trump Dividend” if Republicans maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

Speaking to reporters in Ireland, Trump said the government could afford the payments, pointing to the amount of money he says is coming into the country.

But there is a major hurdle: Congress would have to approve the payments. House Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged that lawmakers would need to work out the details, including how the plan would actually be funded.

The proposal could cost more than $1 trillion if every eligible adult received the full amount. Economists and lawmakers have therefore questioned whether the plan could realistically be financed without increasing the federal deficit or putting additional pressure on inflation.

Trump has not yet provided a complete plan explaining exactly who would qualify, how the payments would be distributed, or where all of the money would come from.

For now, the $5,000 payment is a proposal, not a guaranteed check.

The idea is already becoming one of the most talked-about economic issues ahead of the November midterm elections.
