Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, at the age of 89.

The Norwegian Royal Court confirmed his death, bringing an end to his long reign. Harald became king in 1991 and served as Norway’s monarch for more than three decades, becoming a widely respected and unifying figure in the country.

The King had experienced several health problems in recent years and had been hospitalized earlier this month with a bacterial infection.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Norway, with flags being flown at half-mast and tributes being paid to the late monarch.

King Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, and their children. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has succeeded him as Norway’s new king.

Norway now enters a period of national mourning as the country remembers a monarch who spent more than 35 years serving his nation.
