Police have confirmed that the sudden death of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star The Vivienne is not being treated as suspicious, as tributes pour in for the beloved performer.
The 32-year-old, whose real name was James Lee Williams, passed away last week, leaving fans and loved ones devastated. The Vivienne had achieved international fame after winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, with her career continuing to shine bright in the years following.
Cheshire Police reported that officers were called to an address in Chorlton-by-Backford at 12:22 AM on Sunday due to a sudden death. After investigating, authorities confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances, and a file will be submitted to the coroner.
The Vivienne’s publicist, Simon Jones, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, writing: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved James Lee Williams, known to the world as The Vivienne. James was an incredibly kind, warm-hearted, and loved individual. His family is devastated by the loss of their son, brother, and uncle, and they are deeply proud of all James achieved in his life and career. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
The Vivienne’s most recent appearance was in the 2023 promo for Dancing on Ice, where she finished as the runner-up.

Simon Jones PR confirmed the tragic passing of The Vivienne, whose real name was James Lee Williams, with an emotional statement shared on Instagram. He wrote: “It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, this weekend.”
Jones also respectfully asked for privacy for Williams’ family during this difficult time, requesting that they be allowed space to grieve and process the loss. He expressed his grief, saying, “These are words I never wanted to write. Viv was not only a client but a dear friend, and someone I cherished deeply.”
Reflecting on their time together, Jones shared, “From the moment I met them in 2019, I knew we were destined to create something special. I became their manager, and the connection was immediate. Viv’s talent was unmatched, and their energy lit up every room they entered. Their quick wit and comedic genius made me laugh like no one else ever could.”
He continued, “I’m incredibly proud to have had them in my life for the past five years. Tragically, their career was just beginning to take off. Viv had found a true passion in musical theatre, a space where they thrived and excelled.”
Jones concluded with a heartfelt message: “I am devastated by this loss. RIP, my wonderful friend. You left us far too soon.”
Williams, who finished as a runner-up on Dancing on Ice in 2023, had recently delighted audiences as the Wicked Witch of the West on a UK and Irish tour of The Wizard of Oz. They also reprised their role in the West End’s The Wizard of Oz at the Gillian Lynne Theatre last year.
In a touching tribute, pop star Ariana Grande, ahead of attending the 2025 Golden Globes, shared a photo of The Vivienne, accompanied by three hearts and an infinity emoji.
Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse expressed her sorrow, saying, “Some news hits harder than others, and this one has taken me by surprise. I absolutely adored The Viv. A true trailblazer, so creative, warm, and funny.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage also shared her heartbreak, calling the news of Williams’ death “devastating.”

Your laugh, your wit, your incredible talent, your drag—everything about you was unforgettable.”
She continued, “But above all, it was your friendship that I cherished the most. You were a guiding light for so many. It was incredible to watch you make your West End debut and see your dreams unfold right before my eyes. I feel lucky to have shared so many laughs with you.”
Visage ended the tribute with: “I love you, my dear. You will be profoundly missed. May your light continue to shine brightly forever. Tear my angel, fly high.”
The Vivienne had been set to return to the stage next month, starring as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on tour.
In a statement on social media, the production expressed their sorrow, saying: “We are heartbroken to learn of The Vivienne’s passing. Her immense talent, humor, and dedication to the art of drag inspired so many. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy will live on as a shining example of creativity and authenticity—truly a champion in every sense.
