Trump Takes Aim at Food Industry, Promises Action Against “Nasty Monopoly”

President Donald Trump is preparing a new legal order aimed at changing the way food—particularly meat—is processed in the United States.

On Friday, August 28, Trump said he was directing officials to prepare legal documents that would give farmers and ranchers greater ability to process their own food. He described the current system as a “nasty monopoly” and said he wants to give producers more control.

The announcement comes as Americans continue to face high grocery prices and as the U.S. meat industry deals with historically low cattle supplies.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the administration is preparing changes that could make it easier for smaller meat processors to operate, including allowing more producers to sell across state lines and reducing what officials describe as outdated regulations.

The U.S. meat-processing industry is highly concentrated. Four major companies—Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA and National Beef Packing Co.—handle roughly 85% of U.S. meat processing, according to Reuters.

Trump’s proposal has already drawn criticism from some industry and agricultural groups, particularly over concerns that changing inspection requirements could create food-safety risks. Experts have also questioned how much the plan would actually increase competition, given the difficulty and expense of operating smaller slaughter and processing facilities.

The administration’s announcement comes after Trump recently moved to allow additional tariff-free imports of ground beef, a decision that has frustrated some American cattle producers.

For now, the details of Trump’s planned legal order have not been fully released. The administration says the goal is to give farmers and ranchers more options while addressing competition and food prices.

The move could become an important test of whether the administration can reduce the influence of America’s largest meat processors without weakening food-safety protections.
