Iconic ‘Home Alone 2’ actress dies aged 81

Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished character actors and a face most of us have seen every Christmas period since 1992.

Brenda Fricker, the Academy Award-winning Irish actress who won the hearts of millions as the gentle Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81.

Her agent confirmed the news on Friday, paying tribute to an extraordinary performer whose career spanned more than six decades and left an unforgettable mark on film, television and theatre.

Although many younger fans remember Fricker for her touching performance alongside Macaulay Culkin in the 1992 Christmas classic, her greatest critical acclaim came just a few years earlier.

In 1990, she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her moving portrayal of Christy Brown’s mother in My Left Foot, starring opposite Daniel Day-Lewis. Throughout her career, she also appeared in acclaimed productions including The Field, A Time to Kill, Angels in the Outfield, Casualty and Coronation Street.

In recent years, Fricker had spoken candidly about the health challenges that had forced her away from the spotlight, but she remained deeply admired for her warmth, honesty and talent.

Tributes have already begun pouring in from fans and fellow actors, many remembering not only her award-winning performances but also the compassion she brought to every role.

She leaves behind a legacy that spans generations, ensuring her unforgettable performances will continue to be treasured for years to come.

Rest in peace, Brenda Ficker.
