A routine fishing trip turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Florida after a 71-year-old man was attacked by a massive alligator while posing for a photograph with a fish he had just caught.
The victim, Steven Hamilton, was fishing at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Winter Garden, near Lake Apopka, on October 16, 2026. He was reportedly a regular visitor to the area and enjoyed spending time fishing along the water.
According to witnesses, Hamilton had caught a bass and was holding it up so someone could take his picture. In a matter of moments, the peaceful scene took a terrifying turn when a large alligator emerged from the water, grabbed him by the leg, and pulled him into the pond.
Witnesses were left horrified as the attack unfolded. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the presence of other alligators in the water made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Hamilton’s body was recovered approximately two hours later. The medical examiner determined that he died from severe injuries to his left leg and drowning, and his death was ruled accidental.
The alligator involved in the attack measured nearly 12 feet long. Wildlife officials captured and killed the animal following the incident.
