The United States has avoided another government shutdown after President Donald Trump signed a temporary spending bill on September 2.
The measure keeps federal agencies funded through December 11, 2026, giving lawmakers more time to reach agreements on the government’s full-year budget.
The deal means the government will continue operating when the new federal fiscal year begins on October 1. However, Congress has still not completed all 12 annual spending bills needed to fund the government through September 2027.
That means the budget fight isn’t over.
Lawmakers will have to return to negotiations later this year, with the November midterm elections adding another layer of political pressure.
For now, federal agencies remain funded — but another deadline is already approaching.
