Donald Trump’s weight has come under renewed scrutiny after his latest medical report showed that he had gained 14 pounds since his previous annual physical.
Trump weighed 238 pounds during his May 2026 medical examination, according to a report released by the White House. That was up from 224 pounds recorded during his April 2025 physical. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, his reported body-mass index was 29.7, just below the standard threshold of 30 for obesity.
The White House physician nevertheless described Trump as being in excellent health and said he remained fully fit to carry out his presidential duties. The medical report recommended continued weight loss, improved diet and increased physical activity.
Doctors Discuss the Potential Health Risks
While the official medical assessment was positive, independent physicians have raised concerns about the health implications of additional weight in older adults.
Scott Kahan, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness, said obesity is associated with a range of health problems and can increase the risk of premature disability and death.
Former FDA commissioner David Kessler also discussed the potential importance of visceral fat, which is stored around internal organs. He noted that excess visceral fat can be associated with serious health risks.
Trump’s Reported Weight Gain
The latest figure also represents a significant increase compared with Trump’s reported weight during his previous presidential campaign.
The Washington Post noted that Trump weighed 215 pounds in a 2023 Georgia booking record, although the newspaper cautioned that the origin of that figure is unclear. Compared with the 238 pounds recorded in May 2026, that represents a difference of 23 pounds.
Trump has previously spoken about wanting to lose weight. His physicians have also advised him to focus on weight loss, diet and physical activity.
The president has acknowledged that he does not follow an especially demanding exercise routine and has frequently spoken about his preference for fast food. He has also said that golf is one of his main forms of physical activity.
What the Medical Report Says
Despite the concerns raised by outside physicians, Trump’s own medical team did not report that he was suffering from a serious new illness.
The May medical report said Trump demonstrated strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function. It also noted slight lower-leg swelling that had improved compared with the previous year.
The report therefore presents two different perspectives: Trump’s physicians say he remains in excellent health, while independent doctors have emphasized that his recent weight gain could carry longer-term health risks.
The available information does not establish that Trump is facing an imminent health crisis. Instead, the discussion centers on whether reducing his weight could lower potential health risks as he continues serving as president.
