Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter has officially embraced a new name, leaving behind her father’s famous last name.

Suri was born in April 2006, six years before actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced in 2012. While neither Suri nor her parents have publicly commented on the reason behind her name change, it comes after years of reports suggesting she has become estranged from her father. Cruise is also the father of adopted children Isabella, 33, and Connor, 31, whom he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Holmes has rarely spoken publicly about her daughter, but has repeatedly emphasized how proud she is of the young woman she has become. Speaking to Town & Country shortly after Suri left for university, the actress reflected on watching her daughter begin a new chapter.

“I’m proud of my daughter,” Holmes said. “Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her, and I’m happy.”

She added that she remembered the excitement of starting adulthood herself and was looking forward to seeing Suri discover who she wanted to become.

Holmes has also been vocal about protecting her daughter from the spotlight. In a 2023 interview with Glamour, she explained that because Suri had grown up under intense media attention, shielding her privacy had always been one of her biggest priorities.

“What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her,” Holmes said. “I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person.”

The name change, first reported by Page Six and later confirmed through voter registration records obtained by People, sees Suri adopt her mother’s middle name, Noelle, in place of her father’s surname. She reportedly registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, while studying at Carnegie Mellon University under her new name.

The move change already been hinted at months earlier. During her high school graduation in June 2024, the graduate’s name was listed as Suri Noelle, prompting speculation that she had quietly decided to distance herself from the Cruise surname.

Despite largely staying out of the public eye, Suri has collaborated with her mother professionally. She provided vocals for the opening credits of Holmes’ 2022 film Alone Together and also contributed to Rare Objects. Holmes later described working alongside her daughter as deeply meaningful, saying she hoped Suri would continue appearing in her projects because “she’s my heart.”

Holmes has also stepped in to correct online speculation surrounding her daughter. In December 2024, she publicly dismissed reports claiming Suri had inherited a multimillion-pound trust fund from Tom Cruise after turning 18, calling the story “completely false.”

While Suri has never publicly discussed her relationship with her father or explained her decision to adopt a new surname, her latest move has drawn widespread attention online, with many viewing it as another sign that she is carving out her own identity as she enters adulthood.
