18-year-old Thomas Stein, convicted in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller has been sentenced to life in prison after a Florida judge denied his final request before being led away.

Before sentencing, Stein accepted responsibility for his role in the crime, admitting that his decision to get behind the wheel that night was “selfish” and expressing regret for the pain caused to Kayla’s family.

Although he maintained he did not know a robbery would end in violence, he acknowledged that fleeing the scene contributed to the tragic outcome. Some viewers praised his statement as sincere, while others dismissed it as a calculated attempt to gain sympathy.

As his last request, Thomas Stein asked if he could hug his family one final time in the courtroom, but Judge Nick Thompson refused, saying he could say goodbye but could not have physical contact. The exchange quickly went viral, with social media users divided over whether Stein’s emotional apology reflected genuine remorse.

The case stems from the March 2024 killing of Kayla Rincon-Miller, who was walking with two friends after leaving a movie theater in Cape Coral, Florida. Prosecutors said Stein and Christopher Horner Jr. were searching for robbery victims when they pulled up alongside the teens and a shot was fired, fatally striking Kayla in the chest. Stein was convicted of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted armed robbery, receiving a life sentence plus an additional 45 years in prison.

During the sentencing hearing, Kayla’s loved ones described the lasting impact of her death. Friends spoke through tears about the trauma they continue to carry, with one saying it feels like living in “a coma” she cannot wake up from.
