Why Mark Zuckerberg warns against screenshotting Facebook Messenger chats

Many Messenger users are surprised to learn that screenshot notifications do exist on the platform—but only in specific situations.

Back in January 2022, Mark Zuckerberg announced a privacy update for Messenger that alerts users when someone takes a screenshot of disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted conversations.

At the time, Zuckerberg explained that the feature was designed to provide additional privacy protection for users who choose disappearing messages, a setting where messages automatically vanish after they have been viewed.

To demonstrate the feature, he shared a screenshot of a Messenger conversation with his wife, Priscilla Chan.

When does Messenger send a screenshot notification?
Messenger will notify participants if someone screenshots:

Disappearing messages
Vanish-mode style conversations
Certain end-to-end encrypted disappearing chats
However, Messenger does not generally notify users when screenshots are taken of:

Regular Messenger conversations
Standard text chats
Photos and messages in ordinary chats
This distinction is what often causes confusion.

Why were people skeptical?
After the announcement, many social media users immediately pointed out potential workarounds.

Some suggested using:

Another phone or camera to photograph the screen
Screen recording tools
External devices to capture content
Others speculated that disconnecting internet access before taking a screenshot might prevent notifications, though Meta has not publicly confirmed such methods as reliable or effective.

The broader point raised by critics was that no screenshot-detection system can completely stop someone from preserving content if they are determined to do so.

What does this mean for privacy?
The update was part of Meta’s effort to strengthen privacy protections amid increasing concerns about digital security and encrypted communications.

Still, privacy experts often note that users should assume anything visible on another person’s screen could potentially be copied, photographed, or saved in some way.

In short:

✅ Screenshot notifications exist for disappearing messages in encrypted Messenger chats.

❌ Regular Messenger conversations generally do not trigger screenshot alerts.

So if you’re using standard Messenger chats, you typically won’t know if someone takes a screenshot. If you’re using disappearing messages in an encrypted conversation, Messenger may notify participants when a screenshot is captured.
