Chilling text from pregnant teen found dead in boyfriend’s backyard

Kylee Monteiro, just 18 and 11 weeks pregnant, was allegedly stabbed to death by 22-year-old Gregory Groom. Prosecutors say he then buried her in his grandparents’ backyard, concealing the crime with cut trees and brush.

Before her tragic death, Monteiro had reached out to her sister, sending a haunting text.

Final message
On August 7, 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro sent her final message. She reached out to her sister Faith with a chilling text, claiming that her boyfriend had attacked her.

“He threw me on the ground, and pulled my hair and strangled me,” she wrote, according to the New York Post.

“My phone’s at 4 percent if I die, it was Greg.”

The next morning, Groom went to the police in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, reporting Monteiro missing.

He told investigators she had recently left a residential program and had taken a rideshare to his home on August 6, where she wanted to stay. Groom claimed the two argued over her living arrangements and that she later left.

But it was clear that something was very wrong.

”I know there’s been a lot of speculation..”
Concern grew among Monteiro’s family when the teen, known for her active social media presence, suddenly stopped posting online. On her TikTok account, she had announced her pregnancy and described Groom as a man who treated her like “gold,” according to CBS News.

“I know there’s been a lot of speculation of domestic abuse, but that wasn’t the case in their relationship,” Faith Monteiro, Kylee’s sister, later told outlets.

Investigators launched a large-scale search on August 8. Groom was initially charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery, and witness intimidation.

But the investigation soon escalated. When police informed him that they would search his grandparents’ property on County Street in Rehoboth, Groom allegedly confessed.

According to Prosecutor Jason Mohan, Groom admitted that after a fight behind a shed, he stabbed Kylee twice in the neck and once in the chest with a kitchen knife, which snapped in the attack. He then dragged her body roughly 20 yards away and buried it about five feet underground.

The alleged confession
Mohan said Groom even drew a “rudimentary map” showing authorities where the grave was hidden. Search teams later discovered a disturbed patch of dirt, concealed by brush and cut trees piled near the shed.

Despite the alleged confession, Groom pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail. He is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on September 10.

Monteiro had just graduated from Attleboro High School earlier this summer. It remains unclear whether the child she was carrying was Groom’s.

“She was so loving and so caring, and I love her so much. My daughter was her best friend,” said family friend Kira Schofield.

”She wanted to be a mother. She was so happy,” Schofield told CBS News.

Faith Monteiro, still grappling with the loss, shared:

“I lost my sister, and I will never see her again or say anything to her or get the chance to say goodbye or tell her that I love her.”

Loved animals
Faith describes Kylee as a lover of animals and a genuinely cheerful soul.

”She’s such an outgoing person. She’s lovely. She loved people. She really was just such a happy person,” Faith said.

Bristol County District Attorney Tom Quinn expressed his condolences to the family:

“Certainly, [it’s] a very difficult time for them. Extend my sympathies to them and ask them to be patient with the process despite the trauma that they are experiencing now.”

The community is planning a vigil in Kylee’s memory. Vigil of Hope for Kylee Monteiro will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 7 PM at Redway Plain & The Veterans Memorial Gazebo in Rehoboth.
