Celebrity chef Anne Burrell’s death ruled as suicide

Anne Burrell was one of the most recognizable faces on the Food Network with her infectious smile and love for food. The news of her death shocked millions of people around the world.

Now the investigation into her death has answers for fans.

Anne Burrell, a chef at the Food Network who was loved for her wit and culinary talent, was reported dead last month after she was found unresponsive in her Brooklyn home.

Now, New York officials are saying her death was by suicide. The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner cited the reasons as being acute intoxication from multiple substances.

The fire department had reported on the incident without identifying Burrell, saying they had responded to her address at 7:50 in the morning of June 17 to a report of a cardiac arrest. Burrell was announced dead upon their arrival.

Anne Burrell’s love of cooking came from watching her mother and Julia Child while she grew up. She studied at the Culinary Institute of America and later went on to become a teacher before she began her television career.

She began working as a sous chef on ‘Iron Chef America’ and was later given her own show called, ‘Secrets of a Restaurant Chef’ which aired for four years. She also appeared on popular shows like ‘Chef Wanted,’ ‘Chopped,’ and ‘Food Network Star.’ She also hosted ‘Worst Cooks in America’ in 2010.

She sometimes appeared as a guest on NBC’s TODAY show where she showed viewers simple recipes to try out at home.

Just the night before her passing, Burrell was onstage at The Second City, a venue in Brooklyn where she was participating in improv comedy with some friends.

After her passing, her family issued a statement that read how Burrell’s “light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world.”

“Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal,” the statement went on to read.

Anne Burrell was 55 years old at the time of her death. She is survived by Stuart Claxton, her husband whom she married in October 2021, and his son, Javier.
