Donald Trump just won’t let go of his Arctic obsession.

In a new statement, the US president has once again floated the idea of seizing Greenland — this time, refusing to rule out the use of military force to make it happen.

By now, most people know Donald Trump has an unusual fixation with Greenland. While many brushed it off as one of his more bizarre publicity stunts, Trump has made it increasingly clear: he’s serious about taking control of the icy, resource-rich island — despite the fact that it belongs to NATO ally Denmark.

In a recent interview with NBC, Trump brought up Greenland once again – this time during a conversation about whether the U.S. might one day use force to make Canada the 51st state. While he called military action against Canada “highly unlikely,” he immediately pivoted back to Greenland with a striking remark.

“Something could happen with Greenland. I’ll be honest, we need that for national and international security… I don’t see it with Canada. I just don’t see it, I have to be honest with you.”

Trump has made it clear before that military action is still on the table – and now he’s doubling down on that stance.

“I don’t rule it out. I don’t say I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security,” he told NBC.

Greenland’s answer
Trump’s comments come on the heels of fresh outrage from Greenland’s newly elected prime minister, who slammed the former president’s ongoing attempts to “buy” the territory.

”We will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone, and that’s the message I think is most important to understand,” said Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who became Greenland’s prime minister in April.

But Trump isn’t backing down. If anything, he seems more determined than ever to make Greenland part of his legacy. Previously, he has made it crystal clear that his sights are still set on the island – military or not.

“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%. Good possibility that we could do it without military force,” he said, before adding, “I don’t take anything off the table.”

Making Canada the 51st state
As we all know, Greenland isn’t the only place Trump has his eye on. In a recent interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, he revealed that while he hasn’t yet discussed making Canada the 51st state, he’s not ruling it out.

Talking about a conversation with Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, Trump confirmed that the topic hadn’t come up — but it might soon.

Carney — along with roughly 90% of Canadians — strongly opposes the idea of folding Canada into the U.S.

Still, Trump says he’s open to the conversation.

”I’ll always talk about that. You know why? We subsidize Canada to the tune of $200bn a year,” Trump said. “We don’t need their cars. In fact, we don’t want their cars. We don’t need their energy. We don’t even want their energy. We have more than they do. We don’t want their lumber. We have great lumber. All I have to do is free it up from the environmental lunatics.”

Then came the pitch, Trump-style.

“If Canada was part of the US it wouldn’t cost us. It would be great … it would be a cherished state. And, if you look at our map, if you look at the geography – I’m a real estate guy at heart. When I look down at that without that artificial line that was drawn with a ruler many years ago – was just an artificial line, goes straight across. You don’t even realize.”

“What a beautiful country it would be,” he added.

Whether it’s Greenland or Canada, Trump’s map of the future seems to be expanding. Could Greenland actually become part of the U.S.?
