Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks’ breathtaking cover of ‘Shallow’

Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks stunned fans when they teamed up for a breathtaking duet of Shallow, the chart-topping song made famous by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born.

In 2019, Kelly Clarkson surprised fans attending her “Meaning of Life” show in Green Bay, Wisconsin with a show-stopping cover of “Shallow,” the 2018 Grammy and Golden Globe winning song, originally performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the hit film A Star is Born.

“This chick is amazing,” Clarkson, 42, said of Gaga, who co-wrote the song for the romantic that she starred alongside Cooper.

“This song, I love it…I thought she and Bradley Cooper did such an awesome job with this song, it’s called ‘Shallow’ and so we’re doing to do our own version of it because obviously I don’t have a Bradley Cooper here.”

“I hope I don’t suck, and if I do, I hope she doesn’t see it,” Clarkson added, according to People.

Her cover was seen by millions of fans, who praised her “effortless vocals.”

“She sings it like she wrote it herself!!! Beautiful,” shares one fan on Clarkson’s YouTube clip.

“This cover still gives me chills. Simply the best,” shares a second, while a third jokes: “Is there any grammy category for covers? You did a great job Kelly.”

Jam session
Then, a couple of years later, country music icon Garth Brooks stopped by the Kelly Clarkson Show for a jam session with the host.

But first, the “Dive Bar” singer told Clarkson about his 2020 duet – “Shallow” – that he performed with his wife Trisha Yearwood.

“I actually saw y’all do this [on Facebook] – it was live in the moment. You were doing some live thing. Is that how it all started?” The American Idol star asks her guest, adding that the song is a highlight of Brooks’ album, “Fun.”

Brooks, who turned 63 on February 7, explains that “somebody requested that him and his wife sing the duet on his Facebook Live show.

“Miss Yearwood knew what she was doing, so I was like, ‘Oh, crap.’ I’d seen the movie – it’s pretty cool,” Brooks said, strumming bars from the song on his guitar.

“It invites you in…I love it,” Clarkson gushes.

‘Fabulous’
And then the country legend invites her to sing along. “I would love to hear you sing,” he said.

“I would love to sing it with you. Sorry Trisha,” she joked. “You’re not here and if you were here, I’d sing three-part.”

After the breathtaking performance, the singer locked eyes with the camera and addressing his wife, he said: “Miss Yearwood I didn’t enjoy that,” before turning away and commenting, “That was fabulous!”

‘Musical chemistry’
The performance was intimate yet powerful. With Clarkson’s soaring vocals and Brooks’ signature storytelling tone, the two created a version of ‘Shallow’ that felt both raw and authentic. The contrast between Clarkson’s contemporary pop style and Brooks’ deep, classic country sound made for a magical blend that resonated deeply with fans across genres.

“Kelly doesn’t just sing a song, she makes you [feel] it and understand it,” writes one fan in the comments section of the YouTube video.

“The musical chemistry between Kelly and Garth is off-the-charts and I desperately want a real duet single from them,” writes a second.

“I can sit here and just listen to them sing all day. They are both so talented and have great personalities. This was so much fun to watch!” offers a third.

Another adds of the chilling performance, “As Garth began, it gave me goosebumps. Kelly came on strong and sounds wonderful. Great duo on a wonderful song. Thanks to you both.”

Kelly Clarkson and Garth Brooks’ duet of Shallow was more than just a cover – it was a moment of pure musical magic. Their voices, blending effortlessly, brought new life to a song already rich with emotion.
