Hidden meaning behind Kendrick Lamar’s chain in Super Bowl halftime show

The Philadelphia Eagles put on a dominant performance, steamrolling the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The game itself was never really close — but the halftime show brought plenty of fireworks.

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance sparked mixed reactions. Some fans loved it, while others weren’t as impressed. Leading up to the big show, much of the buzz centered around how Kendrick would address his ongoing beef with Drake—one of hip-hop’s biggest rivalries.

And Kendrick Lamar did made a bold statement during his performance. The 37-year-old rapper took the stage at the Caesars Superdome, rocking a massive silver and diamond chain featuring a lowercase ”a.”

At first, the meaning behind the letter was unclear. But fans soon made the connection — Kendrick was throwing shade at Drake.

What did the A stand for
In his explosive diss track Not Like Us, Kendrick raps, “Why you trollin’ like a b**h? Ain’t you tired? Trying to strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”*

And just like that, the mystery of the “a” was solved — Kendrick’s chain was a direct reference to “A minor,” another subtle jab at his longtime rival.

Fans on social media went wild over the diss:

“Kendrick Lamar wearing a lowercase A (a minor) chain is diabolical work,” one fan wrote.

“Kendrick Lamar said all he had to with that ‘a minor’ chain,” another added.

“Kendrick wearing a lowercase ‘a’ diamond chain for ‘a minor?’ My kind of hater!”

Some even speculated that the “a” could stand for ”Aubrey” — Drake’s real first name.

But that wasn’t the only shot fired. Kendrick also brought out tennis legend Serena Williams, who just happens to be one of Drake’s famous exes. The petty levels were off the charts—and Williams’ Crip Walking completely stole the show.

Williams didn’t mention Drake after the performance, but she did share her excitement on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little!” she wrote.

The Kendrick vs. Drake Feud
Kendrick and Drake have been at odds since 2023, and things only escalated when Not Like Us dropped. Just four months after Kendrick was announced as the Super Bowl halftime performer, Drake sued Universal Music Group, claiming the label helped Kendrick secure the gig.

Drake’s lawsuit even accused Not Like Us of portraying him as a pedophile. But legal experts weren’t convinced the case would hold up.

Entertainment attorney Camron Dowlatshahi told The U.S. Sun, “This is a hit song, and he’s the main artist. So I’m fairly confident he’s gonna play it.”

And he did — loud and clear.

One thing’s for sure: Kendrick knows how to send a message, whether it’s through lyrics, jewelry, or unexpected guest appearances. And a lot fans loved every second of it. What did you think of Lamar’s halftime performance?
