Federal investigators now probing Taco Bell over parasite outbreak that causes ‘explosive diarrhea’

Federal and state health officials are reportedly investigating whether Taco Bell may be connected to a multistate parasite outbreak that has sickened thousands of people across the United States.

The investigation follows a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the parasite typically contaminates fresh produce and can lead to watery diarrhea with frequent, and sometimes explosive, bowel movements.

Authorities believe lettuce is the most likely source of the outbreak, but they have not identified a specific grower or supplier responsible.

What is Cyclospora cayetanensis?
The CDC says people infected with cyclosporiasis may also experience symptoms including loss of appetite, bloating, fatigue, low-grade fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

As health officials work to determine the source of the outbreak, Taco Bell has voluntarily removed several fresh ingredients from select restaurants. Customers at some locations have reported seeing signs that read: “We are currently unable to sell Lettuce, Cilantro Onion, Pico de Gallo and Guacamole due to a nationwide recall,” according to UNILAD.

At first, it was unclear whether the menu changes were related to the outbreak. However, The Washington Post has since reported that federal and state authorities are investigating whether the fast-food chain played any role in the spread of the parasite.

According to The Washington Post, more than 80 people have been hospitalized during the outbreak. No deaths have been reported at the time of writing.

Michigan has been hit particularly hard, with more than 3,000 reported cases, according to The Independent. The state typically sees only around 50 cases each year.

Became sick after eating Taco Bell
Additional cases have also been reported in Illinois, Virginia, Ohio, and New York.

An anonymous sources told The Washington Post that at least one hospitalized patient reported eating at Taco Bell before becoming sick. However, investigators have also interviewed people who developed the illness despite never eating at the chain.

Even if Taco Bell is ultimately found to have no connection to the outbreak, one source told the newspaper: “It’s good the chain has already voluntarily stopped serving a number of items.”

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation”
In a statement emailed to Fox News Digital, Taco Bell said:

“The health and safety of our guests is our top priority. Public health officials have not confirmed a link to Taco Bell or any specific ingredient, supplier, restaurant or retailer.

“While authorities continue their broader review, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed limited ingredients at select restaurants as a precautionary measure.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation and follow the guidance of public health authorities.”
