After Mitch McConnell’s “proof-of-life” post sparked AI conspiracy theories, a forensics psychologist offered his verdict of the photo, saying it reveals a picture that most people are missing.
Nearly a month after disappearing from public view, Mitch McConnell broke his silence on July 12 with a lengthy Facebook update explaining why he had been absent from the Senate.
“Last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital,” the 84-year-old Kentucky senator wrote. “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.”
McConnell – who reportedly survived polio as a child – said he also developed a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay and has since moved to a rehabilitation center, where he continues his recovery.
“I’ll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible. And I’ll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery.”
Photo raises suspicions
Despite the update, the statement did little to quiet the speculation that had built during his lengthy absence from Washington.
With few details released about his condition before the Facebook post, rumors spread rapidly across social media, with some users even claiming – without evidence – that McConnell had died and his team was hiding it.
The photo shared alongside the statement soon became part of those theories. In the image, McConnell is seen sitting upright in a bed next to his wife, Elaine Chao, while holding the Washington Post’s Sunday sports section in his right hand.
Rather than putting the rumors to rest, the image only intensified them, with some users claiming the photograph had been manipulated or even generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
‘Does not appear to be AI generated’
After analyzing the image using multiple AI detection tools, clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. G said he reached a very different conclusion.
“Based on all of the AIs that I ran this through, it does not appear to be AI generated,” he said, adding “that doesn’t mean it wasn’t manipulated, but it doesn’t look like something that was fabricated out of absolutely nothing.”
“If it was, they really screwed up. This would be a crazy way to compose an entirely fake picture,” he said.
What the newspaper reveals
Much of the online speculation centered on the newspaper McConnell was holding.
“Obviously, they want to show that it is from the day where the picture was taken. They want to show this is the day you can see the newspaper,” Dr. G said.
But after studying the image, the body language expert believes the newspaper may reveal something McConnell hadn’t intended to leak to the public.
Rather than seeing it as a carefully staged prop, Dr. G suggested McConnell’s grip of the paper reflects his current physical condition.
“I think that he’s holding it the best that he can right now.”
“Have you ever held a newspaper this way? Even if you’re trying to pose for a picture and you’re holding it in an unusual way…I really think that’s as high as he can hold it. I think that’s absolutely the best that he can do right now.”
Instead of projecting confidence, the psychologist explained that his hold on the paper communicates “extreme frailty and weakness.”
Missing wedding ring
Another “detail”red flag” that caught his attention was the absence of the senator’s wedding ring.
“Sometimes when you’re in the hospital, they’re concerned your hands are going to swell… so they might remove jewelry.”
However, he questioned why it still appeared to be missing if McConnell had already left the hospital.
“One would think, particularly if his wife came to see him…that that he would have his wedding ring on. The absence of that to me speaks to how frail he really is in this situation.”
Dr. G also compared the photograph with previous public images of the couple – who married in 1993 – saying they usually “appear a lot closer.”
Instead, he believes his wife – whose arm is seen behind McConnell’s back – is supporting her husband.
“It looks like she is trying to prop him up so it’s as good a picture as possible. This seems like one where they are trying to get a picture and this is the best they could possibly do.”
