Some people blame rising country star for Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s split after lyric change

It was meant to be a love song — a personal vow, a musical monument to a Hollywood fairytale.

Instead, what happened on stage has fans questioning the very marriage it was meant to celebrate.

One of Hollywood’s most iconic love stories appears to be coming to an abrupt end. Actress Nicole Kidman and musician Keith Urban, married in 2006 and parents of two daughters, are divorcing.

According to TMZ, the couple has been living apart since this summer, reportedly at Urban’s request. The reasons behind the split aren’t entirely clear yet, though plenty of speculation is swirling. For example, some reports suggest that Keith may have met a new woman.

Famously written for his wife
Another detail that has fans talking occurred during a recent performance, when country superstar Keith Urban shocked the audience by changing the lyrics of his hit song The Fighter.

The song, famously written for his wife Nicole Kidman, suddenly included another woman’s name — a twist that sent social media into a frenzy.

Originally, Urban sang, “When they’re tryin’ to get to you. Baby, I’ll be the fighter.” But in the viral Instagram clip shared by his guitar player, Maggie Baugh, he switched it to: “When they’re tryin’ to get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”

Fans immediately erupted, posting harsh and highly insinuating comments online.

One wrote, “OK, dumping Nicole is looking more suspect.”

Another claimed, “It’s so very obvious she stole him from Nicole… feel so sorry for Nicole. He will dump her too when the party is over.”

And yet another said bluntly, “So he goes and sleeps with his guitar player and slaps Nicole in the face by changing the lyrics in a song he wrote for her to include the other woman?”

One fan commented, “It is so trashy to do this to a song inspired by his wife. It’s the ultimate ick.” Another urged, “Show some class Keith for goodness sake!”

Who is Maggie Baugh?
Maggie Baugh, now a rising name in country music, started out as a classically trained musician in Boca Raton, Florida, even performing at Carnegie Hall in 7th grade.

A self-described “string nerd,” she once dreamed of attending Juilliard but eventually found her path in country music.

Her 2023 release Dear Me and viral TikTok videos, which have racked up over 40 million views, skyrocketed her profile. She’s since played the Grand Ole Opry and dropped several singles in 2025, including her latest, 10 20s Summers.

The country singer also opened up about her approach to songwriting, likening music to a romantic partner.

”I feel like music has always just been my boyfriend. So, whenever I have a boyfriend, it’s always like, ‘Oh, you’re just temporary,’ ” she told People. ”But when I do go through a breakup, I don’t go to the bar. I put my guitar in my hands.”

Maggie joined Keith Urban’s band in 2024, and their collaboration quickly put her in the spotlight — sparking rumors and fan intrigue along the way.

In April 2025, she reflected on her first performance with Urban, which took place at the 2024 Country Music Television Awards and led to her joining him on tour.

“I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since my first ever show with Keith at the CMT Awards!! Who knew this show would kick off an entire year touring the world as his utility player,” she captioned a video of their performance.

“Absolutely so grateful for all of it… every arena, every TV show, every club date … I’ll never forget it! It’s been a wild year… so here’s a little throwback to the CMT awards last year.”

“She liked it”
If we dig a little deeper into Keith Urban’s song The Fighter, he has described it as a reflection of the bond between him and Nicole Kidman.

In 2018, he told fans, “She liked it, I mean, it was such an easy song to write because it was born of real conversations Nick and I had had before we got married, and some of those fears that she had about it, and me wanting to be able to make vows to her — promises to her that I knew I could keep. You just need that chance, just give me a chance, you know.”

He went further, explaining, “In a lot of ways, the song feels like vows, you know, they’re really, ‘oh this is what I promise I’ll be and do, and I’ll take care of you and keep the world away,’ and it was very easy to write from that perspective.”

In an interview with The Boot, Urban described the creation of The Fighter:

”I was working with Busbee that day; we were in London. I was actually driving to the studio to work on this other song we started, and I had most of it — the chorus — in my head. The verses just had to flesh out. I walked into the studio and played the chord progression, and he built this track really quickly, and then I could sing over the top of it. It was just a very quick, quick song to write, because I literally thought about Nic and I and our relationship in the beginning, and some of the things we had said all went into that song.”

He added in a Billboard interview, “It’s really like a vow in so many ways. I want that tenderness to not have to get hardened to the world. That’s my job as her husband, to put myself around”.

What Nicole has said
”I know he hurt you, made you scared of love, too scared to love,” Urban sings in the song.

”He didn’t deserve you ’cause you’re precious heart is a precious heart. He didn’t know what he had and I thank God, oh. And it’s gonna take just a little time. But you’re gonna see that I was born to love you.”

Kidman herself has openly admitted the song’s emotional power. At the 2017 ACM Awards, she said, “I remember when he first played it for me. I started to cry […] he likes these things and they come out of, I don’t know where. They are beautiful gifts. Then, I can’t believe the success for [sic] the album now. It has been a long, long journey.”

Kidman filed for divorce on September 30, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The couple, married since 2006, share two children: 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 14-year-old Faith Margaret. Both have waived spousal and child support, retaining their own assets, while Kidman seeks to remain the primary residential parent.

Behind closed doors, the tension was real. Sources told People that Urban had been making questionable choices for some time, and Kidman fought to salvage the relationship. “She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage,” an insider said, noting that Kidman’s family rallied around her.

So far, Urban has stayed silent on both the backlash and his divorce.
