John Goodman has undergone an incredible weight loss journey in the last 20 years. The actor, known for films such as The Big Lebowski and TV series Roseanne, decided enough was enough after getting sober in 2007, and today, he has lost almost 200 pounds.

Goodman appeared on the premiere of the new Smurf movie on Wednesday, showcasing his new, light-hearted style. However, on social media, fans now fear for his health rather than praising his weight loss.

Throughout his life and career, John Goodman has struggled with his weight. His all-time highest weight was almost 400 pounds.

“I’d get off of Roseanne every spring. I’d lose 60 pounds every spring,” he told David Letterman in 2011. “I’d gain it back and then some, every year. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

Following a stint in rehab for his drinking problem in 2007, Goodman decided it was time for a change. He hired fitness guru and personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, who had previously worked with tennis star Serena Williams.

Soon, he was on a path toward a healthier life. Goodman adhered to a diet rich in Mediterranean foods, including fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables, and fruit, and exercised five to six times a week.

Following his dedication towards a new diet and working out, in 2010, Goodman had lost over 100 pounds.

“This didn’t happen overnight — it’s been an ongoing process,” Shilstone told the New York Post. There needs to be strategic planning. This time, he really wanted to do it.”

“I just stopped eating all the time,” Goodman told ABC in 2016. “I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating alcoholically. In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits.”

He added, “I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”

John Goodman continued to dedicate himself to a new, healthier life. In 2023, he told Rolling Stone Magazine that he had lost 200 pounds and had found a passion for boxing. He said, “It’s usually just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork. It’s great.”

John Goodman has not only maintained a healthy lifestyle but also remained a Hollywood star. The now 73-year-old has maintained a steady flow of work over the last decade, both as an in-person actor and as a voice actor in animated movies.

Sadly, earlier his year, he was in an accident on set and had to be taken to the hospital. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on July 11, Goodman said it was a “real accident “in which he injured his hip.

“We had been working on the scene for a week and a half. I wasn’t quite getting it right, and through a process, I finally made a breakthrough. But after that, we were blocking it, and I was wearing stocking feet, like I had been for the last week and a half. I was passing Tom, and my legs just went on the floor, and I came up parallel to the ground and landed on my hip. I tried to get back up, and when I couldn’t do that, I started fearing the worst. I didn’t know I had fractured it until we got X-rays,” he said.

John Goodman continued, “There was a brilliant doctor on set, and he got me into the Cleveland Clinic [in London]. They operated the next morning, and so far, so good. Unfortunately, I was down for about a month there where I couldn’t do anything, and it was driving me nuts. They found other things to do, and I finally got back into it.”

Luckily, the actor is back on his feet, and as of late, he has appeared with his voice in the new Smurfs movie. On July 13, Goodman appeared at the Smurfs premiere in Los Angeles, where he showed off even more significant weight loss. However, this time, fans were not only impressed but also worried.

Fans took to social media to share their concerns for John Goodman, with one person saying, “He looks terribly gaunt. Not good,” with another saying, “He looks horrible now.

A third person wrote, “Unfortunately, when you lose a significant amount of weight in middle adulthood, you look unhealthy as your skin doesn’t have the collagen it needs to prevent sagging skin.”

Others questioned whether John Goodman had been taking the weight-loss drug Ozempic. Still, many praised the star for his fantastic effort in losing 200 pounds.

“Wow good for him,” one user wrote. Another stated, “He looks totally different. Kudos to him for losing 200 pounds.”

A third person commented, “He looks totally different. Great job to John,” while a fourth said, “Bloody hell, he’s done good-oh!”
