How Melania reacted to King Charles’ ‘cheeky’ joke

King Charles has been known to want to modernize the monarchy since his ascension to the throne.

While out on royal duty, he’s not afraid of stopping and speaking to members of the public, and often, he even tells a joke. It was the very same when he welcomed Donald and Melania Trump as they arrived for their second state visit earlier this week. Charles greeted Melania and told a joke, and Melania had the best reaction.

In July, Donald Trump received an invitation from King Charles. The president and first lady, Melania Trump, arrived in the UK on September 16, marking the first time in history that a president has been on two state visits to the UK.

Donald and Charles spent plenty of time together, while Melania also undertook engagements with with Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla. The POTUS and FLOTUS were first greeted by Prince William and Kate before meeting the king and queen.

Charles is known to stop and chat with members of the public, and sometimes he even cracks a joke. For example, in a video published in December last year, the monarch was seen speaking with some American tourists in Notting Hill, London, who didn’t know Charles would show up.

Charles approached them, saying apologetically: “I’m so sorry you’re being stopped from having to get on the street.”

“Are you all trying to go somewhere else today, are you?” he joked, adding in reference to the rainy weather, “You’re not getting too wet, I hope?”

King Charles cracked a joke while greeting Melania
While joking with the public is one thing, meeting other high-ranking officials and dignitaries might have been different for a 76-year-old king. Not, apparently, in the case of King Charles.

When he greeted Melania Trump during their meeting at Windsor Castle, a lip reader has now revealed that Charles cracked a joke. Melania wore a large, wide-brimmed purple hat that sometimes hid her eyes.

Speaking to Metro, forensic lipreader Nicola Hickling said Donald began the exchange, telling Charles, “How are you doing, it’s a pleasure, Your Majesty. Thank you for inviting me.”

King Charles then turned to Melania and joked, “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat,” to which the first lady responded with a hearty laugh.

Melania and her hats have been the subject of numerous discussions. She wore a similar black hat at her husband’s Inauguration Day in January, and just like in that moment, this time, her hat sparked debate.

Melania’s hat choice “wasn’t a coincidence,” expert says
In fact, stylist and Vogue employee Marian Kwei has no doubt that it wasn’t a coincidence she chose the specific wide-brimmed hat for the occasion of meeting King Charles and the rest of the senior members of the Royal Family.

“The wide-brimmed hat that hides her face points to an attitude where she wants all eyes to be on her husband and his agenda while they are here,” Marian Kwei told the BBC.
