Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel speak out after images surface with newborn baby

Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel have decided to speak out after going viral in a set of photos published by TMZ depicting them running errands with a baby.

The twins first became household names in 1996, when they appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show aged just six years old. Years later, their lives were documented in the TLC reality series Abby & Brittany, which followed their journey through college and into adulthood.

The twins share a circulatory system and all organs below their waist. Abby is in charge of the right arm and leg, while Brittany controls the left side.

Abby and Brittany’s parents, Patty and Mike Hensel, decided against separation surgery after doctors warned the girls’ chances of survival were slim, as reported by “Today.”

On August 14, the now-35-year-old twins were photographed with a baby, carrying a car seat through a car park. The photos, published by TMZ, quickly spread around the internet.

Two weeks later, the pair were seen running errands with Abby’s husband, Josh, and then again near the school where they work.

In response to mounting speculation over the prospect of the twins having given birth, the sisters shared a TikTok video this past Saturday featuring a compilation of images of them with a baby taken over the last few weeks.

The video was captioned ‘Blessed’, while the hashtags ‘sisterhood’ and ‘respect’ were also used.

At the time of writing, none of Brittany, Abby, or Josh Neither has spoken about the identity of the mystery baby in question, nor confirmed or denied if they’ve welcomed a newborn.

Back in 2006, Brittany said: “Yeah, we’re going to be moms. We haven’t thought about how being moms is going to work yet.”

Abby, meanwhile, made headlines last year when it was revealed she had married husband Josh in 2021. The ceremony was kept away from the spotlight, but the pair eventually shared images from the special day on TikTok.

But the big question remains: can Abby and Brittany become mothers? Many assume their unique conjoined condition would make pregnancy impossible, but their mother, Patty, has shared insights that fuel hope.

In a previous documentary called Joined For Life, Patty revealed that both twins have expressed a strong desire to become moms one day. She also explained that their shared organs are functional, suggesting motherhood might be within reach.

Despite huge public interest, the twins have never openly discussed their sex life.

Because the Hensel twins share one set of genitals, they would both feel any physical touch in that area, explained Alice Dreger, a professor of clinical medical humanities and bioethics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, writing in The Atlantic.

As for whether both experience orgasm simultaneously, Dreger admitted, “we don’t know.”

She added that because sensation varies greatly from one twin to another in different parts of the body, it’s “hard to guess how any conjoinment will turn out in practice.”
