Michael Kearns, the groundbreaking actor, playwright, and activist known for breaking barriers in Hollywood, has died at the age of 76. He passed away on October 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that went far beyond the screen.
Kearns appeared in popular productions including Cheers, Beverly Hills, 90210, and the film Body Double. But his impact extended far beyond acting. At a time when many entertainers were afraid to speak openly, he became one of Hollywoodās first openly gay actors and made headlines in 1991 when he publicly revealed that he was HIV-positive.
Throughout his career, he used his voice and talent to challenge stigma, tell powerful stories, and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and people affected by AIDS.
His death was reported by longtime friend and journalist Karen Ocamb. Although he had reportedly experienced health difficulties in recent months, his cause of death has not been publicly announced. He is survived by his daughter.
Michael Kearns will be remembered not only for his performances, but also for the courage it took to stand up and make history when doing so was far from easy.
