Two young brothers who had been the subject of a major missing-person investigation in Canada have been found safe after an extensive search that lasted approximately two and a half months.

Six-year-old Lanakai Morrison and four-year-old Karl Morrison were located safely on September 17, 2026, in West Kelowna, British Columbia, according to the Alberta RCMP.

The investigation began on July 7, when the children were reported missing from the Beaverlodge area of Alberta. The case eventually involved investigators across several provinces and territories, including Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

Police said approximately 70 Alberta-based investigators, along with civilian support staff, contributed to the investigation at various stages. Investigators followed numerous leads, conducted searches of rural properties and coordinated with specialized RCMP units in British Columbia and other jurisdictions.

The children were ultimately located in West Kelowna, in the Okanagan region of British Columbia. Authorities confirmed that both boys were safe.

Police also located Krista Morrison and Daniel Ludwig, who were arrested without incident on outstanding warrants. Both have been charged with contravening a custody order. Those charges have not been proven in court. Authorities said the adults were expected to have bail hearings in British Columbia, while investigators sought to have them returned to Alberta for further proceedings.

Following their discovery, the children were placed in the care of child-welfare authorities in British Columbia while arrangements were being made for their transfer to Alberta.

Authorities have deliberately kept further information about the boys private in order to protect their identities and well-being. The RCMP said no additional details about their circumstances would be released.

The investigation had required cooperation between numerous police agencies and specialized units. RCMP resources involved included emergency-response personnel, federal policing, air services and investigators from the Kelowna and West Kelowna detachments.

The case had attracted significant public attention because of the length of the search and the involvement of multiple jurisdictions. Investigators credited the coordinated effort between police agencies, as well as members of the public and media organizations that helped share information during the search.

After weeks of uncertainty, the most important update was finally confirmed: the two children had been located safely.

Authorities have emphasized that the investigation and related legal proceedings remain ongoing, while the children’s privacy and safety remain a priority.
