Sean “Diddy” Combs has received another surprise update to his prison release date as his legal fight continues.

The disgraced music mogul’s projected release date has been moved forward once again, according to updated records from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The latest change means Combs is now expected to be released on January 24, 2028, around one month earlier than the previous projected date of February 23, 2028.

It’s the latest twist in a sentence that has already seen multiple revisions.

Serving time after federal conviction
Combs is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence at FCI Fort Dix, a low-security prison in New Jersey.

In 2025, a jury found him guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. However, he was acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy that had dominated headlines throughout the high-profile trial.

Why does the date keep changing?
Officials have not revealed exactly why Combs’ projected release has been updated several times.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons does not publicly explain individual sentence calculations, but inmates can earn time off through good conduct and approved rehabilitation programs.

Combs has reportedly been participating in the prison system’s Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), which may allow eligible inmates to receive additional sentence credits.

The legal battle isn’t over
Even with a new release date on the horizon, Combs still faces significant legal challenges.

His lawyers have appealed both his conviction and sentence, arguing in court filings that the punishment was excessive and requesting either his release or a new sentencing hearing.

The appeal is still pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Meanwhile, Combs continues to face more than 70 civil lawsuits across the United States, with new claims continuing to be filed and many are surprised why he would only get 50 months.

In the federal system, inmates who follow prison rules can earn up to 54 days of credit per year of their sentence. This can reduce the amount of time they actually spend in prison.

Combs was reportedly involved in a fight with another inmate at FCI Fort Dix and was placed in solitary confinement afterward. Multiple outlets reported that the altercation began after another inmate allegedly insulted him, and prison staff quickly broke it up.

But he may have still collected enough credits to earn his yearly credit.

Some inmates can earn additional credits by completing approved programs and reports indicate Combs has participated in the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). RDAP can reduce sentences for some eligible inmates, though the exact reduction depends on the person’s conviction and other eligibility rules.

It’s important to distinguish between allegations and convictions.
