Hillary Clinton is speaking out about one of the biggest political decisions in recent history — and she isn’t holding back. During a recent appearance in New York, Clinton reflected on former President Joe Biden’s decision to seek reelection in 2024, calling it a “terrible mistake.”

Moreover, she believes it had major consequences for both his legacy and the Democratic Party.

Clinton said Biden had once signaled that he would serve as a bridge to a new generation of leaders. According to her, stepping aside earlier could have opened the door to a competitive Democratic primary and given another candidate a better chance in the general election.

“He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country,” Clinton said during the interview, per People Magazine.

Biden remained in the race until July 2024, when mounting concerns following his debate performance against Donald Trump led him to suspend his campaign. Vice President Kamala Harris stepped in as the Democratic nominee but ultimately lost to Trump in the November election.

Hillary Clinton argued that if Biden had announced earlier that he would not seek a second term, Democrats would have had more time to organize and choose a nominee through a full primary process.

She even suggested that “anybody else” who emerged from that contest might have been able to defeat Trump.
