Donald Trump has spoken publicly following what authorities are treating as a possible assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

According to U.S. media reports, a man identified as Cole Tomas Allen allegedly entered the venue while carrying guns and knives.

Security sources say he managed to open fire briefly before being subdued by security personnel. No fatalities were reported, though one security officer was injured and is said to be recovering after being struck while wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

The suspect was overpowered by law enforcement inside the venue, which was attended by roughly 2,600 guests. President Trump and other top officials were rushed from the event as hundreds of attendees took cover under tables while gunfire erupted.

Officials are now investigating how the individual was able to bypass security with multiple weapons.

Realized something was wrong
Following the incident, Trump praised the response of security teams and credited quick action for preventing a worse outcome. He also described a moment involving Melania Trump during the early confusion.

Speaking at a briefing, Trump recalled the moment they first realized something was wrong:

“It’s always shocking when something like this happens.

The fact that we were sitting next to each other, the first lady on my right, and I heard a noise,” Trump said, adding they thought “it was either a tray or a bullet.”

He later praised Melania’s awareness during the incident:

“The first lady was doing a terrific job. She loves the country. She recognises it better than any. But she told me numerous times, she said ‘you are in a dangerous job’.”

Trump also emphasized how quickly security responded:

“It was a gun and some people understood that pretty quickly and other people didn’t. I was watching to see what was happening. Melania was cognizant of what happened, and I think she knew.

Again the performance of the Secret Service and the police, all of law enforcement were very good. It was very quick. There was not a lot of time to be thinking. It was a matter of seconds before we were out the door and got into an area.”

Video shared on Truth Social allegedly showed the suspect being restrained by security officers as Trump and the First Lady were escorted to safety.

While concerns have been raised about how the suspect gained entry with weapons, officials say the rapid response likely prevented a larger tragedy.

Trump concluded his remarks by stressing the unpredictability of such threats:

“You can have the greatest security in the world but if you’ve got a whack job whose brain is distorted, they can make trouble.”

What we know about the suspect
Authorities say the suspect identified as Cole Tomas Allen lives in Torrance, California, a suburban city in the Los Angeles area.

Local officials responded to the reports by distancing the community from the alleged incident, with Mayor George Chen stating on social media that “one individual’s alleged actions do not define our city.”

Online profiles linked to Allen describe him as a game developer, engineer, and educator.

He reportedly holds a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills. He is also said to have worked for years as a part-time instructor at C2 Education and self-identified as an indie game developer, releasing a game on Steam called Bohrdom.

A potential motive?
Investigators are still examining a possible motive. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told NBC News that the suspect was believed to be targeting Trump administration officials, “likely including the President.”

Donald Trump described the suspect in strong terms following the incident:

“a lone wolf whack job.”

Speaking on Fox News, Trump also referenced what he said was a manifesto linked to Allen:

“The guy is a sick guy. When you read his manifesto, he hates Christians, that’s one thing for sure. He hates Christians, a hatred.”

He added that even the suspect’s family had raised concerns:

“I think his sister or his brother actually was complaining about it. Even complaining to law enforcement.”

According to CBS News, officials reviewing the suspect’s online activity reportedly found anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric, and said he had attended a “No Kings” protest in California.
