Colorado Football Community Mourns the Loss of a 23-Year-Old Quarterback

The college sports community is grieving the loss of two young athletes whose lives ended far too soon, leaving teammates, coaches, and supporters reflecting on their impact both on and off the field. Among them was Colorado football quarterback Dominiq Ponder, whose passing has deeply affected the University of Colorado program and the wider college football world. University officials confirmed that Ponder died at the age of 23 on March 1, 2026, prompting an outpouring of condolences from fellow players, coaches, and fans who remembered him as a determined athlete and a supportive teammate.

According to reports from local authorities, the incident occurred early Sunday morning in Boulder County. Investigators said a 23-year-old driver operating a 2023 Tesla lost control of the vehicle on a curve shortly before 3 a.m. The car reportedly crossed into the opposite lanes, struck a guardrail and a utility pole, and rolled over. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Later that day, the University of Colorado confirmed the driver was Ponder. The program’s head coach shared a message of sympathy for the athlete’s family and asked the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.

Ponder had recently been preparing for his third season with the Colorado Buffaloes. Originally from Florida, he built his reputation as a talented quarterback long before arriving in Boulder. Standing 6-foot-5 and known for his athletic ability, he played high school football in both Opa-locka and Naples before completing his final year at Myrtle Beach Collegiate Academy. During his high school career, he recorded strong passing and rushing numbers and attracted interest from several college programs. After beginning his college journey at Bethune-Cookman and later spending time at Georgia Tech, he eventually transferred to Colorado, where he continued developing as a quarterback while pursuing a degree in criminology.

In response to the tragedy, the university’s athletics department offered counseling resources to student-athletes and staff as they processed the loss of a teammate and friend. The football program also shared messages honoring Ponder’s dedication, leadership, and positive presence within the team. His passing comes during a period when the college sports community has also been reflecting on the loss of other young athletes across the country, including a freshman baseball player from Radford University who recently died following a separate accident. While the circumstances differ, both losses serve as a reminder of how deeply sports communities are connected. Teammates, coaches, and fans continue to remember these athletes not only for their performances on the field, but also for the character, commitment, and spirit they brought to their teams and communities.
