Donald Trump has never been shy of speaking his mind. The same went after the murder of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. On Monday, he went on a long rant, criticizing the celebrity both on social media and later in front of the press. The backlash was imminent – and many celebrities decided to slam the president for his choice of words.
Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday. Later the same night, police arrested their son Nick on suspicion of murder.
The murders shocked the entertainment world. Rob, a legendary Hollywood director, was also engaged in politics. Per the LA Times, he was seen as a “political force” and a “Democratic Party activist who went beyond the typical role of celebrities who host glitzy fundraisers.”
He was very much involved in, especially, the legalization of gay marriage and early childhood education. Reiner co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, an organization that successfully led the fight to overturn Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage.
Donald Trump said Rob Reiner was “bad for our country”
Reiner was openly critical of Trump for many years, calling him a “criminal” among other things. On Monday. President Trump broke the silence on the Hollywood star’s death, but he did it in what some would call a non-presidential way.
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president continued, “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
In front of the media, Donald Trump was asked about his rant about Rob Reiner, and he continued to bash the late director. He said, “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape, or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”
Celebrities slam Trump over ‘disgusting’ Reiner comments
Both Democrats and Republicans lashed out against Donald Trump’s attack. Also, many celebrities slammed the 79-year-old president.
Patrick Schwarzenegger, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, took to X to bash Trump. He simply stated, “What a disgusting and vile statement.”
Another celebrity to condemn the president was Whoopi Goldberg.
“I don’t understand the man in the White House. He spoke at length about Charlie Kirk and about caring, and then this is what he puts out,” she told Deadline. “Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”
British talk show host Piers Morgan wrote, “This is a dreadful thing to say about a man who just got murdered by his troubled son. Delete it, Mr President.”
Talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who has been a longtime critic of Trump and was even canceled for a short while after accusing Trump of politicizing Charlie Kirk’s death, also lashed out.
“A fool rambling about nonsense”
On his talk show, Kimmel said, “You know, I have to say this is the kind of weekend that makes you wonder if things will ever feel good again. What we need in a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental healthcare, is compassion and leadership.”
Kimmel continued, “We did not get that from our president because he has none of it to give. Instead we got a fool rambling about nonsense, we got a brief moment of respect for our friends in Australia, we got a brief moment of condolence followed by a ‘thing happened’ for the students at Brown and for Rob and Michele Reiner.”
