Celine Dion gives rare update after stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in Thanksgving message to fans

Celine Dion left the spotlight after she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome. The legendary singer paused her career, and time will tell whether she will ever return to the stage. Now, Dion has broken her silence and shared a Thanksgiving message for fans.

Celine Dion is one of the most prominent singers in history. The Canadian-born singer has performed since her teenage years and has held two Las Vegas residencies. However, in 2022, her career took an awful turn as she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome.

It’s a rare and incurable neurological disease that can cause debilitating muscle spasms. The setback left Dion unable to perform the way she wanted.

“It’s like somebody is strangling you. It’s like somebody is pushing your larynx/pharynx,” Celine Dion told NBC last year. “It was like talking like that, and you cannot go high or lower.”

“It gets into a spasm, it started [in the throat]. [And I thought], ‘No, OK, it’s gonna be fine.’ But it can also be the abdominal, can be in the spine, can be in the ribs.”

Dion continued, “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life,” she said. “Sometimes it causes difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”

Dion and her family went through a horrific tragedy in 2016 as they lost their husband and father, René Angélil, to throat cancer. The couple shares a son, René-Charles, and twin boys, Nelson and Eddy.

Celine Dion shares heartwarming Thanksgiving message
Two days after René’s passing, Celine’s brother, Danie, died from brain, throat, and tongue cancer. In 2019, the singer spoke to People Magazine about how she found strength despite the heartbreaking losses.

“To bring my children to understand, ‘Don’t look for dad,’ that made me strong,” she said. “All the little things, and the big things, they have to make you stronger. Otherwise, you don’t understand the meaning of life itself.”

“All of my life I’ve had so much protection. I’m the 14th child of a family. I had a big army,” she said. “I never had time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. It just happened. Suddenly I’m making all of the decisions.” She added, “I’m the boss now.”

It’s been very quiet around Celine Dion in recent years. She was seen with her sons at Paul McCartney’s concert in Las Vegas in October. For Thanksgiving, the 57-year-old broke her silence.

In a candid Instagram video message, Celine Dion urged her fans to take it easy during what, for some, is a stressful holiday weekend.

Speaking to the camera, Dion said, “Dear friends. Today is a beautiful reminder to slow down, take a deep breath and give thanks. There’s something so powerful about gathering with the people you love, whether around the full table, over the phone or even just in your heart.”

“May your day be filled with love, gratitude, and precious moments”
She continued, “I’m so thankful to my family and our moments together that mean the world to me. May your Thanksgiving be filled with joy, with peace, and with gratitude for everything. Even the little things. Happy Thanksgiving, from me and my family… to you and yours.”

Adding to the caption, the singer wrote: “Wishing everyone a beautiful and peaceful Thanksgiving! May your day be filled with love, gratitude, and precious moments with the people who mean the most to you. – Celine xx…”
