Liverpool star Diogo Jota, 28, dies in car crash just 2 weeks after wedding

The soccer world is reeling after the sudden death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother in a tragic car accident in Spain.

Jota, 28, a standout forward for Liverpool and a key player for Portugal’s national team, was killed along with his brother André Silva, 26, near Zamora in northwestern Spain. Silva played for Penafiel, a club in Portugal’s second division.

Just two weeks ago, Jota married his wife, Rute Cardoso, and the couple shared three young children.

The Portuguese Football Federation released a heartfelt statement saying,

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain.”

They praised Jota not only for his impressive 49 caps with Portugal but also for his infectious joy and the respect he earned from teammates and opponents alike.

Jota was part of Portugal’s squads that won the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Rest in peace, Diogo Jota. Your talent, passion, and spirit touched the hearts of fans around the world. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
