George Strait married his HS sweetheart over 50 yrs ago and they still really ‘like’ each other

Marrying your high-school sweetheart was nothing uncommon back in the 70s.

But being in the spotlight for almost fifty years, and suffering losses within the marriage, can definitely ruin it if it’s not based on true and unconditional love.

Thankfully, George Strait and his wife Norma have never stopped loving each other, whether they were facing their happiest moments or living their nightmares.

George and Norma are about the same age, and they come from the same town, which means they got to see each other a lot when they were still children, but they kind of never thought there could be something romantic between them.

As the King of Country Music once told Houston radio station 100.3 The Bull, they once went out on a date, and then they didn’t see each other for quite some time.

At some point, he caught himself thinking that he might be losing something important, so he decided to try to win Norma’s heart again.
In fact, the famous singer has admitted that she was the first woman he ever loved.

The couple eloped in Mexico in 1971, and they got married in a small church ceremony in Pearsall, Texas, before he enlisted in the U.S. Army and shipped off to Hawaii.

In October 1972, their daughter, Jennifer, was born and, nine years later, they welcomed their son Bubba into the world.

Sadly, their beloved daughter passed away only a few months before her 14th birthday in a tragic car accident.

Her passing could have torn the family apart, but their love was so much that they found support in each other and the strength to keep going.

Their son grew up to be a country songwriter and rodeo cowboy, which he took up in college.

The couple has indeed suffered losses and heartbreaks during their marriage, but they never considered giving up.
They have always been there for each other.

You see, Norma was a stay-at-home mom until their son left for college, but since then, she has been following her husband on his tours.

“We do almost everything together … We love each other and we still like each other. A lot!” Strait told PEOPLE in 2012.

Last year, the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary, and the country singer decided to serenade his wife while on stage at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
“Our love is unconditional
We knew it from the start
I see it in your eyes
You can feel it from my heart” the song goes.

It really feels like the man means every single word he utters.

The crowd can’t stop cheering for him and his wife, and one member of the audience can be heard saying “I’ll cry” in the clip.

Indeed, their love and dedication to each other is one of those that make you tear up.
“Wow for a celebrity to hit a golden anniversary is huge. That almost never happens,” someone commented below the video.

We simply loved this serenade. And we’re sure you will, too.
