Donkey Who Inspired Eddie Murphy’s Iconic Shrek Character Passes Away at 30

Beloved Miniature Donkey Perry, the Inspiration Behind Shrek’s Donkey, Dies at 30

Pericles, affectionately known as Perry, the miniature donkey who famously inspired the animated character of Donkey in Shrek, has passed away at the age of 30. His death, attributed to an incurable condition known as laminitis, was confirmed by the Barron Park Donkey Project, who shared the sad news in an emotional social media post on January 4.

Perry’s story began in 1997 when he was brought to California as an emotional support animal for polo ponies. However, rather than calming the ponies, Perry’s spirited personality led him to be rehomed at the Barron Park Donkey Project. It was here, in the late 1990s, that animators from Pacific Data Images—contracted by DreamWorks—visited Perry’s pasture to study his movements and gait for the development of Donkey’s character in Shrek (2001). The animators used Perry’s playful demeanor and distinct movements as a model for the character, who would later be voiced by Eddie Murphy.

Though Perry’s contributions were pivotal to the creation of the beloved character, he was not credited in the film. Nevertheless, his influence on Donkey’s animated antics was undeniable, and he became a cherished member of the Barron Park community, where his soulful eyes and gentle nature captivated visitors for decades.

Perry’s passing follows a prolonged battle with laminitis, a painful hoof condition that caused ongoing inflammation. Despite this, the donkey was surrounded by love in his final moments, with handlers providing comfort through petting, singing, and heartfelt reassurances.

The Barron Park Donkey Project expressed deep sorrow over the loss, praising Perry for the joy he brought to countless people, whether through his appearances at community events, his daily strolls, or simply his warm presence. Fans of both Perry and the Shrek films have since flooded social media with tributes, honoring the donkey who played a key role in shaping one of cinema’s most iconic animated characters.

The Barron Park Donkey Project has announced that memorial plans for Perry will be shared in the coming days, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire.
