One time, I said yes to babysitting for a calm family in the suburbs, but I never thought I would find a creepy secret in their basement. One night, little Ben took me into the dark, and we stumbled upon something really strange that could ruin everything. What we found out changed our lives for good.
Ben dropped his toy car and looked up at me with those big, serious eyes of his. “Kate,” he said, “there’s something you need to see.”
I tried to smile. “What’s up, Ben?”
He glanced around as if someone might be listening. “It’s in the basement. You gotta come now.”
My stomach twisted. Robert had been clear: “Stay out of the basement.” He said it with a look that dared me to defy him.
I knelt down. “Ben, you know your dad said we can’t go down there. It’s off-limits.”
His urgency shook me. “Alright, but we have to be quick.”
We quietly walked over to the basement door. My heart raced as I twisted the doorknob. It was really dark and chilly down there, and I could sense a musty smell in the air.
Ben flipped on the light. “Hurry.”
I trailed behind him, and what I discovered sent chills down my spine. The walls were covered in pictures of Linda. There were hundreds! Linda shopping at the grocery store, Linda enjoying a book, Linda peacefully sleeping…
“What the…?” I whispered.
Ben tugged my sleeve. “I told you it was important.”
I grabbed my phone and dialed Linda. She picked up on the third ring. “Linda, you need to come home. Now.”
Her voice wavered. “What’s wrong, Kate?”
“Just come. It’s about Robert.”
Linda showed up twenty minutes later, looking really pale and tired. When she walked into the basement, she gasped and quickly covered her mouth with her hand.
“Oh my God…” she whispered, tears filling her eyes. “He’s been… watching me?”
I nodded. “We need to get out of here. This isn’t safe.”
Linda’s hands shook as she looked around. “How could he do this? How could I not see?”
I put a hand on her shoulder. “We’ll figure it out. But first, we need to leave.”
She nodded, still in shock. “Yes, we need to go. Ben, pack a bag. We’re leaving.”
Ben didn’t say a word. He dashed up the stairs while I assisted Linda in collecting some important things. My thoughts were all over the place, trying to understand what we had just witnessed.
As we stepped out of the house, I couldn’t help but think that Robert’s obsession was more intense than we realized. But right now, the most important thing was to get Linda and Ben to her family’s safe place.
Linda called me the next day, her voice quivering with determination. “Kate, I need your help. We have to document this.”
“Of course,” I replied. “What’s the plan?”
“We need proof of his behavior. I want to confront him, but we need to be smart about it.”
The following days were a whirlwind of secret missions. Linda trailed behind Robert, recording everything he did. She was super careful, noting down every conversation and action without him even realizing it.
One evening, I sat with Linda, reviewing the footage. “He’s obsessive,” I said, shaking my head. “But why? What’s driving this?”
Linda sighed. “I don’t know. But we need to find out.”
“Be careful,” I warned. “We don’t know how far he’ll go.”
Linda nodded. “I know. But I can’t live like this anymore.”
That night, we came up with a plan to swap out the old photos in the basement for new ones. These new pictures would be of Robert, and he wouldn’t even know we took them. It was a bit dangerous, but we thought it was the only way to help him see how serious his actions really were.
